BG News ! Department of Floriculture reaches out to farmers at Khonmoh B2V Mela

To increase the Jammu and Kashmir flower production, Department of Floriculture today reached to people at Khonmoh by conducting a mega awareness camp-cum-mela in which DDC member from Khonmoh and young BJP leader Er Aijaz Hussain was the Chief Guest.



Speaking on the occasion, officials of the Floriculture department while making the farmers aware stated that the country has a huge domestic flower market and the current imports with respect to cut flower are 14 per cent in India. They said that J&K produces only 10 per cent of the flowers are consumed locally. “The 90 per cent flowers are brought from Flower Mandis of the country. These figures are a motivation for a Kashmiri farmer to venture into floriculture field,” the Officials of Floriculture said.




They said that Floriculture has emerged as alternative source of livelihood for small and marginal farmers. Floriculture has proven successful in boosting the income of farmers. This sector has attracted the attention of the farming community owing to better yields and ever increasing demand. The Floriculture officials said that different Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS)like MIDH, RKVY, and ATMA are being implemented for the promotion of commercial Floriculture Sector. The department is organizing regular trainings within and outside J&K for farmers/growers in order to make them aware with modern trends in Floriculture Sector. “Awarenss programs/exposure visits are being organized by the department to attract more and more farmers,” the officials said.





Speaking on the occasion, Er Aijaz Hussain urged the farmers to registers for various CSS and to benefit from the flower production to supplement their livelihood. He thanked the Floriculture department for reaching out to the doorsteps of people and making the farmers aware about various schemes. Er Aijaz said that dozens of farmers opted for on the spot registration and vowed to increase the production of flowers.
