The sacred occasion of Rath Yatra witnessed a unique blend of devotion, emotion, and spirituality in the city, as renowned Odissi dancer Subikash Mukherjee organized a special पूजा and celebration of Lord Jagannath at his residence. The event stood out for its heartfelt participation and deep spiritual ambiance, drawing devotees into an atmosphere of reverence and joy.
The occasion commenced in the evening with the resounding chants of “Jai Jai Jai Krishna,” creating a spiritually charged environment. Speaking on the occasion, Mukherjee shared his deep emotional connection with the festival. “I wait for this day throughout the year. For me, this is as significant as Buddha Purnima, Durga Puja, or Kali Puja. I don’t just call it Rath Yatra—it is Jagannath Puja. I cannot imagine a moment without Lord Jagannath,” he said.
It is learned that nearly 21 years ago, following a divine vision, Mukherjee established the deity of Lord Jagannath in his home. Although he had brought the sacred Daru Brahma in 1993, the formal rituals began later as per the divine instruction received in his dream. Since then, the puja has been conducted annually with strict adherence to traditional rituals, including the Shodashopachar ceremonies.
A major highlight of the celebration was the Rath Yatra procession accompanied by devotional kirtan. The deity was ceremonially placed on the chariot, and the procession proceeded towards the local Ashtajat Durga Temple, where the Lord will reside for seven days. During this period, various religious rituals such as dance offerings, bhog, and aarti are performed.
Mukherjee further explained that while the original idol at his residence remains immovable, a replica is used for the Rath Yatra procession. The chariot carries Lord Jagannath along with Lord Balaram and Goddess Subhadra. Daily rituals, including morning and evening bhog and aarti, continue until Ulto Rath, strictly following Vaishnav traditions.
As an Odissi dancer, his devotion to Lord Jagannath is deeply ingrained in his artistic practice. Before every performance, he offers pushpanjali to the Lord, believing that divine guidance shapes his journey. “The Lord shows us the path and will continue to guide us in the future,” he added.
Mukherjee also expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his family, friends, neighbors, and the priest for their unwavering support in making the occasion successful. Overall, the celebration at his residence emerged as a remarkable example of the harmonious blend of devotion and cultural tradition.
