18th December 2025 :
IIT Kharagpur, India's first and largest IIT, has unveiled a new research initiative in collaboration with Intuitive Foundation, a non-profit organisation supported by Intuitive Surgical, a global leader in minimally invasive care and robotic-assisted surgery.
The programme aims to develop comprehensive digital models of surgical care, enabling more reliable safety guidance, AI-enabled decision support, and responsible automation in robotic-assisted procedures. These developments are expected to enhance surgeons' skills and consistency, resulting in improved patient outcomes through standardised surgical processes.
IIT Kharagpur will use the da Vinci Research Kit (dVRK) to test these models, linking digital models to physical robotic movements and enabling the development of early automation modules in controlled laboratory settings. The research will be conducted by a multidisciplinary team and supported by IIT Kharagpur's collaboration with Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Through detailed documentation of cholecystectomy procedures, the researchers will gain practical insights into surgical processes, refining digital models and identifying areas where supportive tools can have a significant impact.
