Kolkata 28 July 2023;
West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) launched a comprehensive study on “Accelerating Net Zero Transition of Public Transportation Systems in the City of Kolkata” in collaboration with TERI, the leading Environment think tank.
The study provides the overview on the future of electric mobility in the city of Kolkata and pave way for replication in other cities in the state.
The study summaries CO2 and air pollution related emission reductions; which could be achieved over the next 28 year period. The study came out at a very important time where WBTC celebrates its 150th year of Calcutta Tramways, 75 years of CSTC and TERI celebrates its 50th year of establishment.
Speaking at the event, Rajanvir Singh Kapur IAS, the MD of WBTC, mentioned the benefits of the energy transition in the public transport and associated emissions reductions which will have positive impact on health issues. He also said that he would share the report with linked organisations like KMC, PCB and Environment Department.
The team from TERI presented the project findings and Mr. K. Umamaheswaran from Teri thanked WBTC's leadership in supporting the project in all levels. In addition, TERI observed around 7000 crore plus rupees would be required over the next 20 years to achieve this clean energy transition.
The report will open avenues for cities to implement similar action plan aiming towards decarbonisation in the public sector.
