Digital Desk:- The Eco Club of the Women's Christian College, Kolkata organized a grand celebration of the 50th World Environment Day on 5th June 2023. The main attraction of the event was a dance drama titled 'Prakriti Mangal Panchali', which was written and enacted by college students Anuja Ganguly, Sutapa Purkait, Debolina Mondal, Nisha Das, Rupsha Auddy, Romanti Baroi, Shampa Naskar, Brishti Pradhan and Barsha Majumder. The Panchali is a pre-19th century traditional Bengali art form of oral narrative songs and stories, often depicting religious and folk themes. It is usually recited in a sing-song manner with accompanying gestures and rituals.
The students adapted this indigenous tradition of writing and made it their own. The dance-drama highlighted the threats posed by human activities, such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change. It conveyed the message "Koro Prakriti mangal koro Prakriti apon/ Gacheder Mongol game prakriti boron" or "Care for nature and embrace nature/Sings songs for the good fortune of the trees and receives them as part of humanity" in a creative and engaging way.
The chief patron of the event, The Principal and Secretary of the College, Dr Ajanta Paul, graced the occasion with her presence and delivered an inspiring speech. She said, "The world is a compendium of many living organisms and if one species is under threat, all are. So, we should not only think about ourselves, but about every other creature on Earth." She also praised the efforts of the Eco Club and the performers for their dedication and talent.
