Study shows that patients have one flare-up a month with each episode lasting for about 2 weeks. The condition is characterized by chronic back pains that spread from the lower back to the hips. These flare-ups last for 3 months, or even longer and the symptoms start occurring in young adulthood.

The condition causes stiffness in the body, which is more persistent in the morning, which lasts for 2 hours or more and sometimes throughout the day. An active lifestyle and abstinence from smoking can help in preventing AS flare-ups. Although there is no known specific cause that triggers the flare-ups, smoking can make the symptoms worse and reduce the effectiveness of treatment. Physiotherapy, NSAIDs, biologics and surgery are the treatments available for mild, moderate, and severe cases of AS respectively.”
