Renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Jagyaseni presented a solo dance performance in Kolkata !!

On 22nd March, a significant addition to Kolkata’s cultural landscape was witnessed with the solo Bharatanatyam recital of nationally acclaimed dancer Jagyaseni Chatterjee. Marking a deeply emotional homecoming, she performed in her own city after nearly two decades since 2006.

Daughter of renowned actress Soma Dey, Jagyaseni’s recital was hosted at Kalamandalam, the dance training institution led by Dr. Thankamani Kutty. The event unfolded in two segments—an enchanting Bharatanatyam performance by the artist, followed by an engaging discussion exploring various dimensions of dance, अभिनय (abhinaya), and artistic expression.

The discussion featured Soma Dey and Jagyaseni Chatterjee herself, with Somnath Kutty as the moderator. Having actively participated in numerous Bharatanatyam seminars across India, Jagyaseni has also been deeply involved in initiatives focusing on the role of dance in nurturing the psychological and emotional development of children.

Jagyaseni received her rigorous training in the traditional guru-shishya parampara under the esteemed Bharatanatyam exponent Dr. Lakshmi Ramaswamy. Through years of dedicated practice and performances across South India, she has established a distinct and respected identity within the Bharatanatyam fraternity.

Reflecting on her debut performance in Kolkata, Jagyaseni shared that her early exposure to both dance and acting was greatly influenced by her mother, Soma Dey. Growing up amidst music, dance, and visual arts, she eventually found her true calling in dance. She expressed deep gratitude towards her guru, Dr. Lakshmi Ramaswamy, acknowledging her pivotal role in shaping her artistic journey. While she has been honoured with numerous platforms and recognitions in South India, this first performance in her hometown held a uniquely emotional significance.

The recital itself was a thoughtfully curated exploration of the feminine psyche across different eras of poetry. From classical literature to twentieth-century verse, Jagyaseni portrayed evolving expressions of womanhood through a series of evocative characters. The performance sought to transcend linguistic boundaries, emphasizing that in the realm of dance, it is emotion—beyond words—that becomes the ultimate medium of expression.

Jagyaseni Chatterjee also revealed her plans to bring more innovative productions to Kolkata in the near future, promising a continued enrichment of the city’s cultural fabric.
